What goes around comes around...
A couple weeks ago I got invited to celebrate and test-eat a very interesting collaboration with Honest Burgers and my mates at Karma Cola.
They’ve created a burger where they braise beef with Karma Cola combine it with Ginger Pig dry aged beef, smoked Applewood Cheddar and green chilli coleslaw. It was amazing. A big thick juicy patty that’s sort of sweet but offset by the chilli slaw. It was created to complement the citrus notes of the cola and certain cocktails concoctions, but to me, it’s just a damn tasty burger.
I’ve known the Karma Cola guys for some time now and they’re dudes and I love their overall vision. They’re inspiring because at a global level they want to do good for the world, and actually are which has earned them The World’s Fairest Trader award by Fairtrade International. That’s pretty huge!
What I found out was that Karma Cola greatly support the growers of their cola nuts in Sierra Leone, West Africa. When the Ebola outbreak happened in 2014, Karma Cola’s scheduled visit there was cancelled, so they asked the farmers how they could help – the peoples response was to keep doing what they were doing – to keep selling cola, because those cola sales funded medicine, sanitized villages and chlorinated water to the point where Ebola did not affect the village that farmed these cola nuts!
Now I see how something can be a business and do good for the world.
Their Honest Burger Collaboration finishes on the 3rd of August… this Monday. So, get down there because £1 from these Karma-cola burgers goes to this charity, as does a percentage of every Karma Cola sold in the UK. When you think about the 2 billion cola’s sold and drunk every day (not only is that a gross figure), but also gross that none of that money goes to the people who work hard to grow the cola nuts in absolute poverty-stricken countries.
Lets be honest, it’s not all charity though, I also believe in being kind to yourself. So treat yourself to a burger.
PS: if you haven’t tried Karma Cola, I’ll be selling some at my pop up Skate Cafe this weekend at Tom’s Skate Shop! Come join the party.
